What is Ohagi?

Ohagi is a food made by steaming glutinous rice, pounding it lightly until the rice grains remain, and then coating it with red bean paste. Ohagi was served to entertain guests, get together after rice planting, as a snack for children, and at Buddhist memorial services. Generally, ohagi can be made with koshian (smooth red bean paste) or mashed red bean paste, as well as with kinako (roasted soybean flour) or sesame.

Since ancient times in Japan, it has been believed that adzuki beans, which are the ingredients of red bean paste, have the effect of warding off evil spirits. For this reason, it is thought that the custom of eating on the equinoctial week and the 49th day of mourning has taken root.

Akanene's ohagi not only offers general ohagi, but also progressive ohagi that incorporates seasonal flavors. Please enjoy Akanene's various ohagi.
